Mehmet, My Hawk by Yashar Kemal
Djebar narrates the lives of three friends killed in 1956 during the struggle for independence and reflects on the horrors of war and exile. She meanders through Algerian history, dealing with religious extremism and intellectual persecution. The New York Times deemed the novel "a requiem for a nation’s unfinished literature."
