This fictional account depicts the European conquest of Africa and the early phase of colonial rule, the Africans' responses and initiatives, and the resulting transformation of the African societies and cultures under the pressure of the colonial state, missionary acculturation efforts, merchant and industrial capitalism and urbanization. The book celebrates the vitality of the African civilizations that 19-century racism had denied. This is #4 of the BMC Series: Good Books II: Reading with the Experts (LH12049).
