Exploring Magic Realism Tell a Friend about this Course

Many Americans today feel that they live in a world in which the impossible has become the norm. The genre of magical realism emerged in response to just this type of situation. As Salman Rushdie puts it, sometimes “the real, by the addition of the magical, actually … becomes more real, not less.” Join us to discuss Tea Obreht’s "The Tiger’s Wife" and short works by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabelle Allende, Toni Morrison and Louise Erdrich and explore how these authors helped their audiences come to terms with unbelievable realities.
