Ian McEwan’s Nutshell: Hamlet in Modern Dress
What do William Shakespeare’s tragic hero, Hamlet, and Ian McEwan’s hero, a 9-month old fetus, have in common? Why do both heroes hate their mothers and encounter challenges as they seek to avenge their fathers’ murders? Our goal will be to discover—(and delight in) the intriguing and wickedly clever ways McEwan creates a modern mystery story that directly parallels the plot of Hamlet. Bring your “willing suspension of disbelief” to class as we engage in a lively discussion of the play and novel.
