The First Elizabeth
Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom has reigned for over 60 years. During that time, her kingdom has experienced a significant deterioration in its international standing, accompanied by growing internal divisions. The crisis over Brexit is just one of the symptoms of decline. On the other hand, the first Elizabeth oversaw her kingdom’s rise in its station. Despite both internal and external challenges, her reign witnessed growing economic and political stability, a nation able to withstand a concerted external threat. Elizabeth II is in reality a figurehead. Some historians believe that Elizabeth I was not much more than that, more of a nuisance that her ministered had to work around.
