Frida Kahlo and "Half the Picture" at the Brooklyn Museum
"Frida Kahlo: Appearances Can Be Deceiving" is the largest U.S. exhibition in ten years devoted to the iconic painter. This is also the first exhibit in the United States to display clothing and other personal possessions that have been locked away since her death in 1954. Kahlo came to define herself through her ethnicity, disability, and politics, all of which were at the heart of her work. Frida Kahlo's work, inspired by nature and artifacts of Mexico, employed a naive folk art style to explore questions of identity, gender, class and race in Mexican society. After a guided tour of the exhibit you will have lunch on your own. The afternoon will be spent viewing "Half the Picture: A Feminist Look at the Collection" in the Elizabeth Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum. Spanning almost one hundred years, the exhibition focuses on historical and contemporary work by more than fifty artists who combine message and medium to engage with political and social issues that are often radical and inspiring.
